Use it or lose it, they say!
Usually the slogan refers to memory or frequent flyer points but the same applies to vocabulary, too.Maybe you learnt a word last week - let's call it "farkle" - and unless you use farkle in a sentence pretty soon then the same word is likely to melt into oblivion.
Let's pretend farkle means to pick up an object with your toes. Anglers at low tide can be nifty farklers of buried pipi shells, just as anyone who's gathered a sock off the floor has been known to indulge in farkling.
That's the problem with acquiring strange words. Unless we use them, then the farkles of this world will only grow stranger to us.
According to different sources on the web this is what I learnt about farkle:
"Motorcycle enthusiasts may install accessories, called farkles (also spelled farkel), to customize their machine. The term Farkle apparently originated among the ST1100 riders. It is an acronym:"
F ancy
A ccessory
R eally
K ool &
L ikely
E xpensive

Hi Peggy! Interesting word.-christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
I tell people all the time to Farkle Off!
First of all a belated Happy Birthday to you and lots of luck and love for this coming year and a big Hug
I love learning new words and it is indeed hard to remember if you don't use them very often. I still look up new words every day. I will remember farkle thanks to the acronym. I will check William he should know this.
Take care
We play a dice game called Farkle, but I had no idea it was an actual word. Thanks for the education.
I agree. I've noticed that vocabulary and pronunciation need to be used or they get lost/erased in our brains. I'm sure this applies most all of our body functions.
I didn't know the definition of Farkle but like the above comment I think I've seen the game at the store.
I'm happy to read another post here.
Hello Christine, Debra, Marja, Kathy and Bill
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment even though it is a long time between posts for me.
Kathy you are correct it is also a dice game and Debra 'Farkle Off' I am sure is used as well.
On further investigation I discovered this"
"A farkle can be a combination of fart and chuckle, an involuntary fart caused by laughter. It may also refer to a fart that is trapped by clothing and “travels” between the legs to be emitted from beneath the genitals. A farkle can be a red-headed person with pale skin and freckles. To be farkled is sometimes used as a computing term, meaning “very messed up.”
Well hopefully now we will be able to retain "Farkle" in our memory banks and smile if we hear the word used or even use it ourselves.
